Cronaca di Ibu Martha da Gedono (Indonesia)

Abbiamo vissuto un’esperienza davvero unica questa vigilia di Natale: una visita del Governatore di Giava Central, la terza provincia più grande dell’Indonesia con una popolazione di circa 40 milioni di abitanti. È un musulmano moderato e un buon governatore al suo secondo mandato. Ogni Natale visita numerosi luoghi cristiani per vedere le loro attività natalizie e condividere il buonumore e promuovere l’unità e il rispetto tra le diverse religioni. Sabato ci hanno detto solo che voleva venire, domenica sera quattro membri del suo staff sono venuti a vedere il luogo e hanno spiegato a Ibu Cory, Cathrin e me cosa sarebbe successo. Abbiamo fatto un programma con loro e detto alla comunità. La veglia di Natale è di solito uno dei giorni più affollati dell’anno con i preparativi in ​​cucina, la pensione, la chiesa, il refettorio, il lavoro regolare e tutti i presepi natalizi che hanno bisogno di tocchi finali. Abbiamo informato i nostri villaggi vicini perché si è trattato di un grande evento locale e li abbiamo invitati ad aiutare a dare il benvenuto al governatore. Hanno decorato la strada che attraversa il villaggio con stendardi e si sono avvicinati al monastero indossando i loro vestiti migliori – c’erano molti bambini.

I primi ad arrivare furono un paio di fotografi alle 7.00, poi lo staff del protocollo alle 7.30. Il governatore Ganjar stava arrivando in moto con circa 30 persone – è molto sportivo e informale per essere vicino alla gente -, oltre alla polizia di Salatiga che era stata informata e alle persone dell’intellighenzia locale che conosciamo bene.

Il governatore fu accolto con entusiasmo alle 9.00 e andò rapidamente dai bambini e distribuì palloncini mentre parlava con loro. Poi è venuto in chiesa con noi dove alcune sorelle stavano organizzando il presepe di Natale – in anticipo rispetto al normale programma. Apprezzò il loro lavoro e passò attraverso la chiesa nel monastero facendo domande su tutta la nostra vita, storia e costumi.

Alcuni musulmani si rifiutano di entrare in una chiesa ma il governatore Ganjar è molto aperto e cerca di dimostrare con le sue azioni come possiamo vivere insieme in armonia. Fu molto colpito dalle buone relazioni tra la comunità e i nostri vicini – tutti i musulmani. I giovani che si erano formati un gruppo anni fa per sorvegliare la strada che portava al monastero ogni notte di Natale e di Pasqua e sono diventati una guardia d’onore molto amichevole erano tutti presenti e hanno reso omaggio al Governatore.

Voleva vedere il luogo in cui produciamo il kefir anche se non conosceva il nome. Lo assaggiò e ordinò 10 bottiglie di ogni sapore. Quindi è arrivato ai dolci. Deliziosi! Chi ha inventato la ricetta? Immacolata dopo 10 tentativi! Parlava con chiunque incontrasse, sorella o lavoratore, chiedendo da dove venissero, con libertà e facilità – nessun segno di essere un alto funzionario. Questo è molto nuovo in Indonesia!

Quindi siamo tornati nella sala capitolare per incontrare la comunità che si era radunata dopo il lavoro del mattino. Abbiamo avuto uno scambio caloroso pieno di sorrisi e risate. Quindi abbiamo invitato il governatore a venire mentre provavamo una canzone di Natale per la messa di mezzanotte e lui e i suoi compagni ci seguivano in chiesa e andavano nella cappella degli ospiti ad ascoltare mentre cantavamo un’interpretazione a quattro voci di Adeste Fideles. Poi qualcuno ha avuto l’idea che ci fosse bisogno di una foto di gruppo con i nostri ospiti e così la comunità è uscita dalla porta della cappella dell’ospite e abbiamo fatto una foto sui gradini con altre risate e cantando “Terima Kasih Seribu”.

Poi c’erano ancora altre foto insieme ai nostri vicini del villaggio e altre risate e strette di mano fino a quando finalmente il governatore e il suo gruppo salirono in moto per continuare le loro visite. L’ultimo minuto del video lo mostra in una chiesa parrocchiale cattolica. È stato molto contento della sua visita a Gedono e così colpito che un video di Gedono di 30 minuti è stato messo sul suo canale YouTube e circa 150.000 persone lo hanno visto.

Tutti i nostri amici sono stati contenti di questa testimonianza di amicizia interreligiosa. Mostra anche che l’immagine di molte persone secondo cui tutti i musulmani sono aggressivi è distorta. Che ci sia pace e armonia in Indonesia e nel mondo nel nuovo anno! Il Natale porta incontri di gioia anche per i musulmani!

We had a very unique experience this vigil of Christmas – a visit of the Governor of Central Jawa, the third largest province of Indonesia with a population of about 40 million.

He is a moderate Muslim and a good governor in his second term. Every Christmas he visits a number of Christian places to see their Christmas activities and share good cheer and promote unity and respect among different religions.  We were only told on Saturday that he wanted to come, Sunday evening four of his staff came to see the location and explain to Ibu Cory, Cathrin and me what was going to happen. We made a program with them and told the community. The vigil of Christmas is usually one of the busiest days of the year with preparations in the kitchen, the guesthouse, the church, the refectory as well as regular work and all the Christmas cribs that need final touches. But this was an added activity…

We notified our neighboring villages because this was a big local event and we invited them to help welcome the governor. They decorated the road through the village with banners and came up to the monastery in their best clothes – lots of children.

The first to arrive were a couple of photographers at 7.00 then the protocol staff at 7.30. Governor Ganjar was coming on motorcycle with about 30 people – he’s very sportive  and informal to be close to the people -, plus the Salatiga police that had been notified and the local intell people whom we know well.

The Governor was greeted with excitement at 9.00 and he quickly went to the children and gave out some small footballs as he talked with them. Then he came up to the church with us where a few sisters were arranging the Christmas crib – ahead of the normal schedule. He appreciated their work and passed through the church into the monastery asking questions all the way about our life and history and customs. Some Moslems refuse to enter a church but Governor Ganjar is very open and trying to show by his own actions how we can live together in harmony. He was very impressed with the good relations between the community and our neighbors – all Moslems. The young men who formed a group years ago to guard the road up to the monastery every Christmas and Easter night and have become a very friendly honor guard were all present and paid their respects to the Governor.

He wanted to see the place where we make kefir even though he didn’t know the name. He tasted it and ordered 10 bottles of each flavor. Then on to the cookies. Delicious! Who invented the recipe? Immaculata after 10 tries! He talked with everyone he met, sister or worker, asking where they were from, with freedom and ease – no sign of being a high official.  This is very new in Indonesia!

Then we went back down to the chapter room to meet with the community who had gathered after morning work. We had a warm exchange full of smiles and laughter. Then we invited the governor to come as we practiced a Christmas song for the midnight mass and he and his companions followed us into  church and went to the guest chapel to listen as we sang a four voice rendition of Adeste Fideles. Then someone had the idea that we needed a group photo with our guests and so the community came out the guest chapel door and we had photos on the steps with more laughter and singing ‘Terima Kasih Seribu’.

Then there were still more photos together with our neighbors from the village and more laughter and handshakes until finally the governor and his group got on their motorcycles to continue their visits. The last minute of the video shows him in a Catholic parish church.  He was very happy with his visit at Gedono and so impressed that a 30 minute video of Gedono was put on his youtube channel and about 150.000 people have watched it.  All our friends were happy with this witness to interreligious friendship. It also shows that many people’s image that all Moslems are aggressive is distorted.  Let there be peace and harmony in Indonesia and the world in the New Year! Christmas brings encounters of joy even for the Moslems!
